FOWD NYC – 2009
November 17th, 2009
Today is my first time ever attending a Future of Web Design (FOWD) conference and let me tell you it is quite amazing.
All of the speakers are bringing stuff I’ve never seen before! Within the first half hour of the conference I already had tons of new ideas and so much inspiration that if I only saw that one presentation I could walk out with enough to build some pretty sexy designs.
By the end of the conference my mind wad filled and ready to explode with new ideas that had surfaced while I was surrounded by people who had inspiration flowing out of them. Some of the presentations that really stuck out and hit home for me were;
-
Dan Cederholm
Dan’s presentation of Progressive Enrichment with CSS3 was what first cracked my head open to the design world. All six of his points echoed deep and made me suddenly look at designing in a whole new light. -
Mike Kus
Fully equipped with 3D glasses, Mike brought an amazing set of ideas to life and in your face with his 3D presentation, his idea of taking risk really makes sense if you ever plan to break the mold and set yourself apart from every other designer. -
Elliot Jay Stocks
As you remember Elliot was the one who got me into design in the first place so I was definitely looking forward to seeing his presentation and he did not disappoint one bit. Both him and Dan referenced the fact that just because 98% of people won’t see your website in all its rich CSS3 glory, doesn’t mean that the 2% that will not appreciate that extra “TLC” that you give them. -
Joshua Davis
Wow, this guy had the crowd in stitches with just about every other sentence that came out of his mouth. His stories really made sense to me, and his skill with Flash made me actually want to turn around and take a serious refresher course in Flash so I could add it to my arsenal of skills. The one part of his presentation that made me realize what I needed to do, was to stop hesitating and just play! See how things look, don’t be afraid to try things that aren’t normal.
After Joshua finished speaking the conference came to a close and now it was time to mingle with everyone. After a bit of browsing the crowd I stumbled upon Elliot and was able to meet him and introduce myself. It’s a great feeling to meet someone who you look up to for inspiration, and idolize and then find out he sees you as an equal/colleague and not someone who is below him. The fact that people who have such a talent and still keep a level of humility towards others is something to admire in a person. I was able to take a picture with him which, again made my first time at FOWD even more memorable.

Whilst chatting with Elliot I also met two awesome designers from Washington D.C., Jasper Saunders and Emily Wilson who provided moral support for a certain someone trying to make it in the freelancing world (that would be me). Well, that wraps up my first ever experience at the Future of Web Design – New York City 2009. Hope you enjoyed the read, I know I enjoyed the writing part!
